Abstract

The purpose of the study was to describe students’ experiences learning their primary instrument during the COVID-19 pandemic at the “Daniel Alomía Robles” Public Higher Institute of Music in Huánuco. The study employed a qualitative approach, specifically a basic, descriptive case study design. The participants were seven intentionally selected students who played instruments such as the trumpet, piano, saxophone, violin, percussion, clarinet, and voice. A 16-item interview guide, validated by expert judgment, was used to collect data. The results showed that virtual learning of the primary instrument was limited and inadequate for the students, who experienced connectivity issues, a lack of appropriate equipment, and a lack of effective feedback. Learning theoretical music theory was more favorable than the practical aspect. The students unanimously expressed their preference for in-person classes over virtual ones. It is concluded that the virtual modality is not suitable for the teaching and learning of the primary instrument, given its practical and personalized nature.
